Developing interdisciplinary consciousness for sustainability: using playful frame reflection to challenge disciplinary bias

چکیده
A major challenge for interdisciplinary teamwork on complex sustainability issues is the often-conflicting disciplinary perspectives and underlying values assumptions among collaborators. Interdisciplinary collaboration researchers practitioners therefore requires consciousness (IC): epistemological metaphysical understanding appreciation of one’s own others’ views their differences. Since it cannot be assumed that professionals have IC, there a need explicit training, instance in higher education. We developed Frame Reflection Lab (FRL)—a playful intervention to stimulate development IC through frame reflection—and investigated its application cross-disciplinary student teams collaborating issues. aimed understand how reflection can contribute enhancing by analyzing written oral reflections 23 Master’s degree students. found FRL contributed as sparked cognitive, affective, critical reflection; created safe space helped participants articulate assumptions; balanced structure freedom. Our findings demonstrate prepare collaboration, deeply rooted possibly unconscious preconceptions challenged build awareness This calls explicitly facilitating affective processes, using playfulness, whereas training interdisciplinarity usually focuses cognitive processes. These are promising terms informing inspiring future efforts use education, research, practice support address

Interdisciplinary - A Historical Reflection
Interdisciplinary team work combines the strengths of two or more disciplines with the aim of identifying problems, revealing associations, working out solutions to problems, and applying these. Such collaboration frequently yields new, unexpected, and possibly trail-blazing results. The remarkable aspects of interdisciplinary teams include the emerging insights and conclusions, which extend be...
متن کاملDisciplinary, Multidisciplinary, Interdisciplinary -concepts and Indicators
Introduction The production of knowledge is dominantly organized in disciplines. At the same time, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research is developing at the boundaries of the scientific disciplines. In this paper we compare disciplinary and non-disciplinary forms of knowledge production in terms of communication patterns. We will suggest an indicator for measuring the degree of inte...
متن کاملSociety–nature Coevolution: Interdisciplinary Concept for Sustainability
A brief historical background to the currently ascending interest in evolutionary and coevolutionary theory is sketched, and the concept of society–nature coevolution is positioned in this broader field. The significance of society–nature coevolutionary pathways for transition to sustainability is highlighted with Schellnhuber’s heuristic ‘theater world’ for representing paradigms of sustainabl...
متن کاملTransition Challenge for Sustainability Assessment
We are particularly interested in the transition of traditional impact assessment into sustainability assessment (SA) to help deliver the 'Green Economy', which is analogous with environmentally sustainable development. We present five theoretical and practical challenges that practitioners face when attempting to implement SA and suggest ways forward to address these, based on our own observat...
متن کاملAttention and Perceptual Consciousness Boston Interdisciplinary Graduate Conference on Consciousness
Chalmers (2004), Wu (2010), and Block (2010) have independently argued that the effect of attention on the content of perception raises a challenge for representationalism. Covert shifts of attention seem to involve a change in the phenomenal character of perception, without a corresponding change in representational content. In this paper, I show that the challenge fails because the arguments ...
